Xiaomi is under the works to release the next iteration in the Mi series. There were few leaks about the device regarding the presence of notch on the display and the in-display fingerprint scanner. The existence of these two features in the device is not surprising as the tech industry has visited a bunch of devices with the notch on the screen. More and more smartphone makers are concentrating on the in-display fingerprint scanner technology.
There have been reports that the Chinese smartphone maker may skip the Mi 7 and name the device Mi 8 instead. Chinese companies have the tradition of skipping unlucky numbers. For instance, the OnePlus 4 was skipped by OnePlus as the number 4 is considered unlucky in China. It seems like Xiaomi has its own reasons for skipping the number 7.
Xiaomi is planning to skip the Mi 7 to align with its 8th anniversary. The anniversary falls later this month. It is in the air that the device will be announced in May and will be available from June. If the rumors turn out to be true, the Mi 8 will be the first Android smartphone to sport a 3D facial recognition technology as seen on the Apple iPhone X.
In terms of specifications, there is no confirmed information. According to the leaked hands-on image, the device will sport a 5.65-inch OLED display with the notch. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM. There will be two internal storage variants – 64 GB and 128 GB. It will run on Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 126.96.36.199.
The pricing for the 6 GB + 64 GB variant is expected to be (Rs 28,500 approx) and the 128 GB variant will cost $518 (Rs 33,500 approx). The launch event is rumored to be on May 23. We’ll get more information once the company launches the device soon.
