Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro Launched Globally, comes with In-display FP and SD845

Published

on

After the Chinese launch back in September, the smartphone giant Xiaomi has finally unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, globally, as scheduled for today at an event held in London, UK.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is the most expensive addition to the Mi-8 series that landed quite a while ago in China. This new flagship comes with 7000-series Aluminum alloy frame followed by a curved glass back having a transparent titanium coloring with highly detailed interiors, reminiscent to the Mi 8 explorers edition. The front as well as the back is protected by 4-sided curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The phone is further adorned with red accents including the red colored camera lining and power button for enhanced looks.

On the front, the Mi 8 Pro gets a large 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a Full-HD+ resolution of 2240 x 1080 pixels in an 18:7:9 aspect ratio, thanks to the notch. Unfortunately, the notch here is as large as the one on the Poco F1 but as a counter benefit, it packs in a full-fledged IR-based facial recognition system. The display further houses an In-display fingerprint scanner and supports Always-on functionality.

Under the hood, it is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with Adreno 630 GPU, 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The company has also included an advanced cooling system for better heat management.

Whereas, we have a 20-megapixel selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture at the front. Moreover, the device makes use of AI for scene detection and video editing.

On the software front, it runs on latest MIUI 10 based on Android Oreo and is backed by a slightly smaller 3,000mAh battery that supports Qualcomm QuickCharge 4.0.

As far as the pricing is concerned, the Mi 8 Pro is tipped at EUR 499 (roughly Rs. 41,300) and will be sold from several retailers including Amazon in a transparent black version alongside a Meteorite black and a Twilight Gold color options.

Additionally, the event also witnessed the launch of budget Redmi 6A mobile phone (at EUR 99), the Xiaomi Band 3 (at EUR 27), and the Mi electric scooter (at EUR 399).

OPPO Showcases 10x Hybrid Optical Zoom & a Bigger UD Fingerprint Scanner

oppo hybrid 10x zoom

OPPO in an event today showcased a 10X camera setup implementing three sensors along with a bigger in-screen fingerprint scanner area. The event didn’t include any smartphone launch or demo of some sort but the Chinese manufacturer promised more in the MWC 2019 event next month.

The 10X hybrid optical zoom technology works by combining its 5X optical zoom with a wide- angle lens that combines to give a 10 times zoom. There is a third camera sensor in the middle for regular snaps but it doesn’t affect the zoom range. The company representatives’ reveals that the module covers the 35mm equivalent of 15.9-159mm focal length. To give you an idea, Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro’s triple camera boasts 16mm to 80mm in 25mm terms.

The new OPPO camera module includes Dual OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) for the main camera and telephoto lens. To build this camera setup, 100+ R&D patients were used and was drop tested 28,000 times. The first samples will be made available in the MWC event in Barcelona. The company promised that this tech will ship to manufacturers this year.

OPPO has also made developments in its display technology with the announcement of a bigger under-display fingerprint scanner similar to the one Lin Bin of Xiaomi introduced earlier today. The new sensor boasts an area 15 times larger than the current one in OPPO R17 and can detect two fingers at same time. Though there was a similar technology with the Vivo APEX concept last year it was not market ready.

A senior OPPO executive calls the technology the new “biometric experience” and is expected to hit the markets and smartphones by the end of this year meaning the company might showcase an early OPPO R19 at MWC 2019 to be held from February 25 to February 28.
