Imagine a phone with no input ports, no buttons and almost a no bezel display with in-display fingerprint sensor and 5G connectivity. That’s exactly what Vivo‘s Apex 2019 is. The smartphone is still a concept and is very similar to the Meizu Zero that was launched yesterday. The Chinese manufacturer is expected to take the same device to the Mobile World Congress next month.
Vivo is one of the creative companies that goes beyond the traditional designs and comes with innovative ideas that push the boundaries. Not long ago, we saw the Vivo NEX Dual Display with a secondary display with only a single set of sensors. The smartphone is only exclusive to the Chinese market but it turned heads all around the world.
As for the Vivo Apex 2019, it features a “Super Unibody” curved glass design without any chassis-affecting outputs. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack or USB Type-C port or any speaker grill. The display acts as a speaker to maintain the unibody aesthetic. The device takes charge via a rear mounted magnetic connector that allows data transfer. However, there is no Qi wireless charging which is surprising for a device with no charging port.
For security, Vivo has embedded a full display in-screen fingerprint sensor which is one of the first. Through many brands has adopted under display sensors, Vivo is ahead of them by providing a reader that works wherever you touch the display.
The Vivo Apex is powered by a Snapdragon 855 and includes the Snapdragon X50 5G modem for proper 5G connectivity. It is paired with 12GB of RAM. There are dual cameras on the rear but the sensor information is yet to be released. There is no visible selfie camera and the company might shock its fans with an integrated under display camera but we highly doubt that.
The smartphone is expect to rebranded (Vivo Nex) later under the different name just like it did with its predecessor Vivo Apex last year. The smartphone is a showcase of technologies that Vivo will be launching over the next 12 months or so. However, we are not sure if we want to switch to a port-free smartphone yet.
