Samsung Finally Launches Galaxy S9 & S9+, Comes with Variable Aperture Cameras, AR Emoji & More!

galaxy s9

After all the leaks and rumors, it’s finally here. All that we saw earlier about the devices are true (most of it!). Today, Samsung made its new flagships, the Galaxy S9 & S9+ official at its Samsung Unpacked event in MWC 2018 in Barcelona, Spain.

Talking about the devices, both come with almost same design the previous year’s Galaxy S8 series, and yeah the fingerprint is finally in the correct position.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with a 5.8 inch QHD+ 18.5:9 display. And the Galaxy S9+ comes with a 6.2 inch QHD+ 18.5:9 display.

Both the devices are powered by either Samsung’s own Exynos 9810 or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, depending on the location. And yeah, this the global premier of Snapdragon 845 (and not Mi Mix 2s). The Galaxy S9 comes with a 4GB RAM and the Galaxy S9+ comes with a 6GB RAM.

Both the devices comes with various internal storage sizes: 64/128/256GB. It also comes with the new stereo speakers.

Coming to the thing that Samsung was hyping the most about the phone, the cameras! Yes, this the area Samsung had been talking a lot about in the teasers, calling it “Camera, Reimagined!”. And yeah, there’s something special here which isn’t found in any camera on a smartphone yet.

Both Samsung Galaxy S9 & S9+ comes with a variable aperture camera (although the S9+ feature a secondary camera, only the primary camera has the variable aperture system). The camera unit has a mechanically adjustable aperture that can switch between f/1.5 to f/2.4 based on the conditions. What this means is that the camera can let in lots of light in when taking the low light shots and can allow only the right amount of light in day light situations depending on the aperture it is in. Also note that the camera can switch between f/1.5 & f/2.4 and nothing in between.

Talking about the camera sensor, the Galaxy S9 comes with a 12MP camera sencor with a second gen dual pixel auto focus, which is said to improve focusing, nose reduction and more. The Galaxy S9+ comes with a secondary telephoto camera, just like the one in Note 8. (You can see the full camera specs below). The camera can also take slow motion video upto 960 frames per second, but it is limited to 720p and can only record 0.2 seconds in slow motion. There’s automatic detection of motion for the start of slow motion recording, so that helps.

There’s also an app called AR Emoji like it was leaked yesterday, that is an animoji clone with something extra. It lets you turn yourself into an animated character. It also have 18 animated GIF stickers that you can access from keyboard in other apps. You can customise the character though. Also, there are some characters like the one in Animojo.

The phones are also coming with a new Dex Pad (yeah it’s now called it, rather than Dex station). Both the phones will support displays upto 2K resolution.

The phones are available in the US from 16th of March and it up for pre order in US & India (You’ve to pay Rs. 2000 upfront for prebooking in Samsung India website).
