Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi usually releases smartphones in the entry-level and mid-range segments. Lately, there have been reports of a flagship series under the Redmi moniker. These flagships are expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, feature pop-up selfie cameras and likely to be launched in the Indian market.
The folks at XDA recently found cues about two upcoming Xiaomi flagship devices with mechanical pop-up selfie cameras. The two alleged devices are codenamed “davinci” and “raphael”, which are named after Renaissance artists. They have leaked multiple times in Chinese micro-blogging website Weibo but didn’t get much importance due to scarce reliability. Now, Redmi itself has shared a glimpse of its upcoming flagship series with a pop-up camera, but without sharing any other information about these smartphones.
The video which was posted on Weibo shows the Redmi branding and some of its latest smartphones like the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi 7 series which are shown in juxtaposition with snippets from the latest Marvel movie: Avengers Endgame. Towards the end of the video, it outlines the company’s next flagship with a pop-up camera. There is a clear emphasis on speed and performance, and Redmi is not hesitating in using the word “flagship.
In terms of pricing, we can expect the Redmi flagship to be an affordable flagship that will be placed between Mi 9 and Poco F1. There is also a chance that the Poco 2 could borrow some of the features teased from the Redmi device. The pop-up camera looks like to be placed a little towards the left side of the upper edge and not the center, as seen from the leaks in the past.
Vivo has already launched a pop-up camera smartphone while Realme and OnePlus and believed to be working on their own versions of pop-up selfie cameras for their upcoming handset. It will be exciting to see which company manages to bring something new to the table while keeping the performance at best.
