Samsung has been ruling the premium smartphone market in India, alongside Apple. Android lovers have been preferring Samsung flagships over any other brand for quite a while but that seems to be changing now. According to the latest analysis of the Indian smartphone market by Counterpoint Research, OnePlus this time, has surpassed Samsung to dominate the premium smartphone division.
This has happened for the first time ever in last full quarter. As of second quarter of 2018, OnePlus has captured 40% of the premium smartphone market due to its recently launched OnePlus 6 which has performed really well in terms of sales. Additionally, OnePlus was also the fastest growing brand in the premium segment with a growth of over 446%, whereas on the other hand, Samsung and Apple are witnessing a gradual decline in the number of shipments.
While Samsung has now lost its throne to OnePlus in the premium segment, recently it recovered its first position in the overall Indian market by beating Xiaomi, most probably due to the recent launches of budget smartphones. It has also been reported earlier that Samsung has sold over 2 million units of Galaxy J6 & Galaxy J8 in India within the first two months.
As of now, Samsung holds the second position with 34% shares of the premium segment. The Galaxy S9 wasn’t a huge success for Samsung in India, as a result, it faced a 25% reduction in shipments compared to the last year’s Galaxy S8.
Similarly, due to the decline in the number of sales of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, Apple is left with just 14% shares which are most probably due to two reasons, the high price of the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 being overlooked due to the latter.
The OnePlus 6 ranks on top with 30% share when it comes to the best-selling model in the premium segment, followed by Galaxy S9 with 12% and OnePlus 5T with 10% shares respectively. Earlier, the company shared that it has sold around 1M units of OnePlus 6 within 22 days of launch. India is one of the most important markets for OnePlus due to the high amounts of sales it draws which forks out almost a third of its global revenue.
The new contenders in the premium market from brands like Huawei, Honor, Vivo, LG and Asus have caused a gradual decrease in the overall premium market share of OnePlus, Samsung and Apple from 95% (a quarter ago) to 88%. It seems that people are choosing Value for money flagships over the mainstream flagships as of early 2018.
According to IDC, Xiaomi is #1 in India for Consecutive 4th Quarter!
As we already know the battle between the smartphone brands especially Samsung and Xiaomi is very intense for the top spot in the Indian market, while Xiaomi tries to maintain its top spot, Samsung looks to gain back its lost spot as the biggest smartphone vendor in the Indian market.
Now According to a new report by IDC, Xiaomi maintained its number one position in Q2 of 2018 as the top smartphone vendor in India as it shipped a total of 33.5 million units and these increased number of shipments represent strong 20% a year per year growth.
Xiaomi shipments came majorly from online sales which account for more than 56% shipment while only 33% came through offline channels
The report also mentions the top 5 vendors of the second quarter of the year, while Xiaomi retains it spot for number one, which makes it fourth consecutive quarter for xiaomi to emerge as top leader with 29.7% market share followed by Samsung with 23.9, Vivo with the great performance got to 3rd with 12.6% share, Oppo at fourth with 7.6 and the 5% occupied by the home grown companies such as Inflix, itel etc.
It is to be noted that Honor, sub-brand from Huawei which climbed to the second position in the online segment with all time high of 8% share and is giving tough competition to both Xiaomi and Samsung for the top spot.
Although Samsung did manage to make up some shares in the last quarter with a year-on-year growth of 47% and with 30% share, Xiaomi has been progressing way faster with a growth rate of 107.6, while Samsung is progressing with much lesser growth rate. Vivo and Oppo have market shares of 11% and 10%, where Vivo has maintained a good growth rate of 32% by shipping 3.6 million phones. Oppo falls behind a bit.
As the per the earlier report by another research firm Canalys which showed that both the companies shipped 9.9 million smartphones in Q2 2018, which is conflicting with this new report. Another report from Counterpoint Research also claimed that Samsung has surpassed Xiaomi in Q2 2018 to reclaim #1 spot. So we’re really not sure which of these reports are the most accurate one, but one thing is for sure, Xiaomi is here to stay and is only seeing growth in it’s sales chart.
Also, Xiaomi’s India head Manu Kumar Jain had this to say on Twitter:
#Xiaomi continues to be the #1SmartphoneBrand in India for the 4th consecutive quarter! one year of market dominance! 💪@IDC‘s Q2 report: @XiaomiIndia was once again #1 smartphone brand in India with 29.7% share. ~1 out of 3 smartphones sold in India are Xiaomi devices.
