HMD Global unveiled the Nokia 8.1 at the launch event in Dubai on Wednesday and is indeed the global variant of the Nokia X7 that was launched back in China in October. The Nokia 8.1 seems to have identical specs to the X7 but is a part of the Android One Program like other Nokia devices from the company in the past. The Nokia 8.1 comes in a two tone design built with 6000 series Aluminium that has diamond edges and passed through two anodising process. It features a 6.18 inch IPS LCD display with a FHD+ (2280 x 1080 pixel) resolution, an aspect ratio of 18:7:9, 500 nits brightness and 96% color gamut. It has HDR10 support and a screen-to-body ratio of 81.5%. Under the hood, it houses an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset clocked at 2.2 GHz and coupled with 4GB LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB internal storage which can be further expanded to 400 GB via microSD card.
In the optics department, the Nokia 8.1 sports a dual camera setup with Zeiss optics consisting a 12MP primary camera with ½.55 inch sensor, 1.4µ pixels, OIS, EIS, 2PD (dual photodiode) tech, dual LED and a 13MP fixed focused lens for depth sensing. On the front, it offers a 20MP with f/2.0 aperture, 0.9µ pixels, and 4-in-1 pixel tech. The front camera comes with features like Pro Camera UI and the company’s signature Bothie feature.
It runs on Android 9 Pie (Android One) and backed is by a 3,500 mAh battery with 2A/9V 18W charging that claims to deliver 22 hours talk time, 24 days standby time and 11 hours playing video. Connectivity features include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, VoWi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack and USB Type-C port while sensors-on board includes accelerometer ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, proximity sensor and a fingerprint sensor at the rear. Other features include single speaker design with a smart amp, 2 mics, Nokia Ozo surround capture and Google ARCore support.
The Nokia 8.1 comes with a price tag of 1499 Dirhams (INR 28K approx). It will be available in Blue/Silver, Steel/Copper and Iron/Steel dual tone color options and will go on sale in European and Middle East markets from mid December. The company has scheduled a launch event on December 10 in India where we can expect the Nokia 8.1 to launch for the Indian market.
