HMD Global today launched the Nokia 8.1 in India. The smartphone was first launched last week in Dubai and is the global variant of the Nokia X7 that was launched back in China in October. The Nokia 8.1 come with identical specs to the X7 but is a part of the Android One program which means it is directly supported by Google with faster updates and long term software support.
The Nokia 8.1 features a two tone design with diamond edge built with 6000 series Aluminium and passed through two anodising process. As for the specs, it features a 6.18 inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of FHD+ (2280 x 1080 pixels), 18:7:9 aspect ratio, 500 nits’ brightness and 96% color gamut. The display comes with HDR10 support and has a screen-to-body ratio of 81.5%. It is powered by a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset paired with 4GB LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB internal storage that is further expandable up to 400GB via microSD card.
In the optics department, the Nokia 8.1 comes with a dual Zeiss optics camera setup with a 12MP primary camera with ½.55 inch sensor, 1.4µ pixels, OIS, EIS, 2PD (dual photodiode) tech and a 13MP fixed focused lens with dual LED for depth sensing. On the front, there is a 20MP with f/2.0 aperture, 0.9µ pixels, and 4-in-1 pixel tech and comes with features like Pro Camera UI and the Nokia’s Bothie feature.
The dual SIM handset runs on Android 9 Pie (Android One) and backed by a 3,500 mAh battery supported by 18W charging that the company claims to deliver 22 hours talk time, 24 days stand-by time and 11 hours playing video. Connectivity features include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, VoWi-Fi, GPS/A-GPS, USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack while sensors-on board includes accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, digital compass and gyroscope. Other features include single speaker design with a smart amp, 2 mics, Nokia Ozo surround capture, Google ARCore support and a circular fingerprint sensor at the rear. It measures 154.8 x 75.76 x 7.97 mm and weighs 178 grams.
The Nokia 8.1 comes at a price tag of Rs 26,999 and will be available in Blue/Silver, Steel/Copper and Iron/Steel dual tone color options. It will go on sale from December 25 via Amazon India , Nokia online store and top mobile retailers like Big C, Croma, MyG, Reliance and Sangeetha. The pre-bookings via the Nokia site and retailers will start from today while Amazon India will have a Notify Me page.
As for launch offers, HMD Global partnered with Airtel to give 1TB of 4G data to Airtel prepaid subscribers on eligible plans from Rs 199, up to 120GB additional data for postpaid subscribers on eligible plans starting Rs 499 along with a 3-month Netflix and 1-year Amazon Prime subscription. The customers who will pre-book or buy using the Notify Me option from Amazon India will get a 6 month screen replacement from Servify, while the customers buying the smartphone from offline retailers will get a 10 percent cashback from HDFC Bank on credit and debit card EMI transactions.
