MediaTek has unveiled its latest SoC( system on chip)-the Helio P60 at MWC 2018. This is a mid-range chip mainly targeted for devices which do not cost a fortune. The chipset will compete against the likes of the company’s own Helio X30. The key attraction of this chipset is that it comes with a dedicated AI unit, the NeuroPilot core.
The SoC follows a 12nm process by TSMC. It has four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four A53 cores also clocked at 2.0GHz. This ensures smooth performance without hiccups. MediaTek promises a 70% boost in performance compared to the previous gen SoC in the lineup.
The chipset is coupled with Mali-G72 MP3 GPU which is 70% more efficient than its predecessor. The AI Core NeuroPilot will carry on AI tasks through the standard Android Neural Networks API. It features three Image Signal Processors thereby making it easy to handle a dual-camera setup using 18% less energy. Smartphones can utilize the AI accelerator present on the chip to perform real-time enhancements and overlays in camera.
The NeuroPilot AI core supports AI developments like facial recognition and object recognition. It also includes NeuroPilot Software Development Kit that is compatible with Google Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI) and supports AI frameworks namely TensorFlow, Caffe, and Caffe 2. MediaTek is also planning to bring Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) support to the new SoC.
The Helio P60 is MediaTek’s most efficient chip in the P-series till date. Compared to the previous generation P23, this new chip uses 12% less power on average. The chipset supports 1080p displays with the aspect ratio up to 20:9.
“Packing big core power and performance with a processing unit purpose-built for AI applications, the MediaTek Helio P60 chipset brings consumers flagship features like deep-learning facial detection, object and scene identification, fluid gaming experiences, and smarter camera functions. This new chipset gives everyone access to incredible devices without the premium price tag”
said TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit, in a press statement. The MediaTek Helio P60 will be globally available by early Q2 of 2018.
