Jio planning on an Android Oreo Go Smartphone powered by MediaTek

Reliance Jio was introduced to the Indian market initially through a tie-up with smartphone maker LYF. The company launched a wide range of smartphones with the bundled offer by Jio. A huge profit was made by the brand’s decision to collaborate with Jio. In the past year, Jio launched its own JioPhone. The JioPhone is a feature phone targeted at middle-class users and few people use it as a secondary device.

Back in October, multiple reports stated that Jio was planning to launch Android-powered JioPhone. Right now, the telecom giant has partnered with Taiwanese SoC (System on chip) maker MediaTek to produce Android Oreo Go edition smartphones. Android Go was first announced at Google I/O 2017. Android Oreo Go edition is a trimmed down version of Android 8.1 Oreo which is designed specifically for low-end devices with up to 1GB of RAM. Go edition is less heavy and comes with very few preloaded apps and hence results in a fluid performance. On top of that, Google has released optimized Go versions of most of it’s leading applications equipped with smaller app sizes.

“Jio is bullish on Android Go smartphone and is working with us and the ODM partners to bring the device to the market in coming months. They have really pushed us to deliver Android Go-based device as soon as possible”

said Kuldeep Malik, country head for corporate sales international at MediaTek at a recent curtain raiser event held at New Delhi. The new smartphone is expected in the first quarter of 2018.

At the event, MediaTek also revealed its MT6739 SoC which brings support for useful features like dual camera, face unlock, and dual 4G VoLTE to Android Oreo Go edition smartphones. The company claims that this new chip is highly power efficient and it is expected to perform well even on devices with 512MB and 1GB RAM. The upcoming Reliance Jio smartphone is expected to feature this MT6739 SoC coupled with either 512MB or 1GB of RAM at a highly competitive price.
