Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20X are now Official

After a long mill of leaks and rumors, the Chinese giant Huawei has finally unveiled its Mate 20-series flagships i.e. the Huawei Mate 20 and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro smartphones at an event held in London. The main highlights of both the phones are the new Kirin 980 SoC, a triple camera setup, and the new AI capabilities coupled with flagship grade specifications and nifty features.

Talking about the Huawei Mate 20 Pro first, it comes with a 6.39-inch OLED display with a Quad-HD+ resolution in a 19:9 aspect ratio, aided by a regular notch which as reported earlier, packs in a 3D depth-sensing camera system (including IR sensor, dot projector, ambient light sensor, and flood illuminator) on its front that allows for face unlocking. The screen to body ratio here is 86.3%, also, it gets the perks of having an In-Display Fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC based on 7nm Finfet process and is claimed by the company to provide up to 51 percent faster launch times. For storage expansion, the device bears the world’s first nano MicroSD card slot on a smartphone.

Further, it packs an optically stabilized triple camera set up at the back in a squircle module. The camera specs here include a 40-megapixel main sensor with f/.8 aperture, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide lens with f/2.2 aperture and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor which allows for 3 times optical zoom and up to 5X hybrid zoom, similar to the P20 Pro. The company claims the camera sensor on the primary 40MP shooter of the device to be largest it has ever produced.

For selfies, it gets a 24-megapixel front-facing shooter. The camera app also comes with an Underwater mode to optimize the shots taken while submerged in water and users also can also click macro shots as near as 2.5cm.

Powering the phone is a 4,200mAh battery which supports a whopping 40W Huawei SuperCharge technology, claimed to be 440% faster than the iPhone XS stock charger and juicing up 70% of charge in just 30 minutes. Interestingly, the device also supports Wireless Charging and is capable of charging other wireless devices as well using the Reverse Wireless Charge feature (world’s first smartphone to do so).

On the software front, the device runs on new EMUI 9 software over Android 9 Pie which new incorporates the iPhone X-like gesture-based navigation system.

While the software and the processor remain the same on the sibling Mate 20, it differs in quite a lot of ways as far as the other terms are concerned.

The Huawei Mate 20 comes with a water drop notch display having a Full-HD+ resolution of 2240 x 1080 pixels in an 18:7:9 aspect ratio. The display bears a screen to body ratio of 88.08% and the brightness maxes out at a 820nits.

For photography, the handset features a three-camera design on its rear, consisting of an ultra wide-angle f/2.2 lens with a 16-megapixel sensor, a wide-angle f/1.8 lens with a 12-megapixel sensor, and 8-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, aided by OIS and advanced AI features.

The battery here is a slightly smaller 4000mAh power cell coupled with the Huawei SuperCharge technology (no 40W, the one on this is the same from old Mate 10).

Other major difference is the lack of In-display FP, instead, it relies on software-based Face Unlock and the physical fingerprint scanner at the back. It is also worth noting that the Mate 20 Pro comes with an IP68 water resistance rating, while the Mate 20 doesn’t have any water resistance.

Further, the Chinese giant has launched the Porsche Edition Mate 20 RS and the productivity-centric Mate 20X. The Mate 20 RS is a beefed up Mate 20 Pro with 8GB RAM/256GB and 8GB RAM/512GB storage options, available in Red and Blue color options. Its back is made of leather and glass and it lacks triple camera setup.

The Huawei Mate 20X, on the other hand, comes with a large 77.2-inch OLED display at a 1080p resolution and supports the Huawei M-Pen that is a stylus which can detect 4036 levels of pressure to make drawing and taking notes more convenient. Further, it comes with 40MP Ultra wide angle Triple Cameras, a 5000mAh Battery, IP53 Water & Dust resistance and Graphene Film + Vapor Chamber Cooling system.

The Huawei Mate 20 is priced at €799 (roughly Rs. 67,800) for the 4GB/128GB variant while the one with 6GB of RAM is set at €849 (roughly Rs. 72,000), while the Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with a price tag of €1050 (roughly Rs. 89,000) for the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage option.
