Based on the latest reports, leading Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor has sent out invitations to a new smartphone launch scheduled on January 22, 2019 in Paris. According to Honor, the new smartphone will be running on Kirin 980 chipset and will be sporting an in-screen camera display, which is the main highlight. Even though the invitation is out, Honor has kept the name of the upcoming smartphone as a secret.
The display hole design is a modified and more optimized version of the display notch that have became a trend among smartphone makers after Apple introduced it in their iPhone X. In the display hole approach, the front camera of the smartphone will be placed within the screen, instead of the notch or on the bezel as seen in other smartphones.
The display hole camera design can be seen as a step towards the development of under display solutions for front camera, inorder to fully eliminate the notch. While the new design approach might seem better than the existing notch design, at the end of the day it may still cause the discomforts of a notch, but at a reduced level.
The image in the invitation reveals that the front camera will be placed at the top-left of the smartphone. While there is very little information available about the new mystery smartphone, the Kirin 980 chipset and the new display hole design indicates that it will indeed be a premium offering from Honor.
Previously there were reports suggesting that other smartphone manufacturers are also planning to introduce the new notch design in their devices, with Samsung getting ready to launch their Infinity O display phone, Samsung Galaxy A8s. But Huawei, Honor’s parent company will be launching a new smartphone with similar design, the Huawei Nova 4 in the coming weeks.
Honor is calling the event as a Global product launch, which indicates that the smartphone will become available in India around the same time. And it is also rumoured that the phone will be the successor to Honor View 10, the Honor View 20!
