The IFA Berlin event is just a day away from the scheduled start date of August 31 but it seems like companies are holding events a day or two earlier than decided to grab the initial publicity. Today, the Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has unveiled a new phone i.e. the Honor Magic 2 which has something serious to do with the design language it carries.

The Honor Magic 2 was teased by company’s president George Zhao as “one more thing”- in typical Apple style, just after the European launch of the Honor Play. This device carries a notch-less display with almost no bezels and will succeed the Honor Magic that was launched way back in late 2016.

Let us begin with the highlight of the device first. The Honor Magic 2 has a similar appeal like the Oppo Find X but implements a different and more practical technology. The front camera, sensors and the earpiece are placed on a sliding component at the back which should be physically dragged by the user in order to make it work whenever required, unlike the motorized mechanism found on the Find X .

However, do note that the Honor Magic 2 is just teased in Berlin as of now while the official launch is scheduled two months later. During the teaser, Honor only played a teaser video that didn’t actually reveal anything except a bit of design language followed by the phone physically being showcased with its sliding capabilities by Mr Zhao.

The guys at Forbes, who actually interviewed Mr Zhao at the event, reveal that the reason why they teased the device so earlier was because one of their competitor was planning for a similar phone and therefore, Honor wanted to do it first.

Mr Zhao also said that the basic hardware of the device with sliding format was already finished months ago but they held it back to pack the newer Hisilicon Kirin 980 chipset with the device which is reported to be the world’s first 7nm SoC built by TSMC, featuring the new NPU reserved for next gen Huawei/Honor flagships. Moreover, the phone is said to pack some extra ordinary AI features with the use of new chipset.

As of now, only the China release has been confirmed. The device is expected to come within next two months in its home country with some minor refinements. Till then, stay tuned.
