Huawei’s next flagship SoC, HiSilicon Kirin 980 to be built on 7nm Process by TSMC

We are expecting Huawei to debut its all-new flagship chipset with the mate line this year. Though the mate line is going take up some more time, we have some interesting info about the upcoming Kirin 980 chip which is the heir to the previous year’s Kirin 970. Last years the Mate was powered by the Kirin 970 and this year P20 is based on the TMC’s 10nm processor.

Recently TSMC had a 7nm FinFET process which has grabbed the attention of many manufacturers. In the previous year, Apple’s A12 SoC was made in this process for all the three iPhone models and this year Kirin 980 is going to take a lead. Now there a fresh report from Digitimes which suggests that the Kirin 980 will also be manufactured by the same company.

So according to the reports, “The upcoming Kirin 980 chips will reportedly adopt Cambricon’s processor IP. Cambricon’s recently-unveiled 1M series is the company’s new-generation AI chip designed using TSMC’s 7nm technology.” Now here there are no specific level of improvements which are to be expected from the AI chip, but we are expecting this to at least bring the similar features to the LG G7 ThinQ’s Camera.

So in the fourth quarter of this year, we can see the Kirin 980 SoC debut inside the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro. Previously there was also a leaked benchmark score which has revealed the performance of Kirin 980 SoC and it was close to 356,918 points over AnTuTu.

HMD Global has send media invites for an upcoming Nokia launch event for “new phones” in Russia. The poster reads “Dear friends, we invite you to worldwide premiere for new Nokia phones”. It mentions the date as May 29 but it the venue has been blurred out. The poster didn’t reveal the name or even hint to the smartphones that will be launched.

The event will be attended by the top management of HMD Global like CEO, CMO and CPO which revels the launch will be a pretty big ones. Also another important point that most of the 2018 Nokia smartphones are already available in Russia, including Nokia 8110 4G, Nokia 3310 4G, Nokia 1, Nokia 6 2018 and Nokia 7 Plus except the Nokia 8 Sirocco and the Nokia 8110 4G. Which means this year’s Nokia 2, 3 and 4 might be launched. HMD Global’s CEO Pekka Rentala already confirmed the existence of Nokia 2, 3 and 5 successors.

Three unknown Nokia smartphones with model number TA-1075, TA-1105 and Ta-1116 were spotted in Russian certification. The certification didn’t reveal any specs so its too early to comment about its segment. Also there was reports that Nokia 3 2018 is getting launched soon. We expect it to run a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset this time instead of a MediaTek one. We will know soon on May 29 at 7 PM.

Valuations are often overrated but not revenue. No company in China has ever achieved $1bn in annual revenue quicker than the smartphone maker Xiaomi, following the launch of it’s first smartphone back in 2011.

Xiaomi fondly dubbed as the “Chinese Apple” by Chinese media is eyeing a giant IPO with a valuation of over $8 billion, but that hasn’t stopped the Chinese OEM from working on new smartphones. Less than six months into 2018, Xiaomi has already come out with Redmi S2, Xiaomi 6x, Mi A6 to name a few.

Early morning today, a list of the upcoming Xiaomi products surfaced online. The list was spotted on Eurasian Economic Commison and reveals a bunch of unreleased phones under the Redmi and Mi series. To add to it, the list also includes the Mi MIX 2s and Redmi S2  which were released earlier this month.

What’s interesting here is that the Mi Mix 2s might actually have a successor likely to be named as Mi Mix 3s, which makes us wonder whether there’ll be a Mi Mix 3.

Other than that there’s  Redmi Note 6, Redmi Note 6A, Redmi Note 6a Prime, Redmi Note 6 Prime, Redmi 6 Plus, and Redmi 6a Plus which will replace the current lineup of Redmi smartphones.

The listing is valid upto 31 December, 2023 which means some of the devices might not even launch this year.
