Gionee Plans to Make Smartphones with In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

Gionee, in case you are not aware of, is one of the early Chinese smartphone makers to enter the Indian smartphone market. The company had established its presence in India in early 2012.The smartphone maker as a whole has failed to capture the market as it expected to. They were not received with great attention in the Indian smartphone industry.

Recently, the company had downsized its operations in India owing to the alleged financial crisis they have been facing in India. Gionee India’s CEO and Managing Director Arvind Vohra left last August after running domestic operations for almost five years. Vohra still continues as Executive Director. David Chang, Global Sales Director for Gionee, is now leading the India operations.

It seems like the company is planning to attempt for a comeback to the Indian market and to attain a position among the top five players in the country. The Chinese smartphone maker is likely to adopt a new business model under which distributors across the country would do their own marketing to enhance sales of the products.

“India is becoming the second-largest mobile phone market globally and, for Gionee, it is as important as China or the European market. It is our commitment to invest further in this market to bring major change”

said David Chang, Global Sales Director, Gionee India, in an interview. They have plans to set up its own manufacturing unit in Faridabad, Haryana. Gionee is currently discussing with the government in terms of legal issues.

“Setting up a manufacturing plant will help us in making all our phones by ourselves”

Chang added. It indeed will reduce the costs incurred by the company for importing the devices from its homeland.

It looks like the company has learned from its mistake. This time, they are focussing on a particular budget range instead of randomly launching smartphones in various segments which was one of the major reasons of their downfall. The upcoming phones will be priced under Rs 15,000 which focusses mainly on camera or battery.

Like other Chinese smartphone makers, Gionee also has got interested in the in-display fingerprint technology. They have announced that the company is working on it and has plans for globally launching the devices incorporating this tech.

“We are working on this new technology. We are working on a smartphone with an under-the-display fingerprint scanner which would be launched globally”

Gionee launched its first bezel-less display smartphone — the M7 Power back in November 2017. They are now planning to introduce a whole bunch of bezel-less devices. The Chinese smartphone maker will launch its first smartphone for 2018 the upcoming month.

“We are aiming to get into the top five smartphone brands in the second half of 2018. In the first half of 2019, we will target to be among the top three players in the Indian smartphone market”

said the Gionee executive. The company seems to be highly ambitious this time. We hope the company would be able to achieve its targets.

Huawei is Working on a LCD display with a Hole for the Camera!

As evident, most of the Chinese brands including Huawei, OnePlus and Xiaomi have been following the steps of Apple since long time. After the launch of the iPhone X, almost every other device came with a Notched display. But soon the brands like Oppo and Vivo took a step ahead and disrupted the market with their own vogue of smartphones having truly bezel-less displays. Now, as per the latest reports, it seems that Huawei too is planning to get on the same bandwagon by using a hole on screen for housing the Selfie Camera.

The report sourced from a South Korean organisation called ET News reveals that Huawei has been working on the development of a bezel-less LCD Display with a hole on top since the fourth quarter of 2017. This will be a replacement to the Notch that will be used to accommodate the front camera. The hole will prevent the camera from being obstructed by the display glass, which would have been the case with an in-display camera technology.

The attached image shows the Huawei’s concept showcasing the transformation from a traditional design to reduced bezels and notch, and from notch to just a point-sized hole for the front camera coupled with skinny bezels. The speaker, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor are now moved to the little bezel on top. This concept may look similar to the Essential Phone at first sight but is way more superior in reality, counting in the negligible bezels at the bottom, and the disengaged camera hole.

Huawei

As per sources, Huawei may turn this hole-punching technology into reality in the fourth quarter of 2018, most probably with their upcoming Huawei Mate 20, or else, they might preserve this concept for the next year’s P-series as well.

The recently launched devices like the OPPO Find X and Vivo NEX employed different innovations for maximising the screen to body ratio by ditching the notch. Let us see if Huawei brings something out of syllabus to compete with two of these fantastic creations. We will keep you updated with the latest information, stay tuned.

Samsung might Merge their Flagship S & Note series!

Published

Samsung may be making major changes in its smartphone line-up next year. The South Korean Electronics giant releases two sets of flagships- Galaxy S series early and Galaxy Note in the later part of the year. Now according to a latest report the company may be merging both the flagship ranges bringing them under a common series.

The alleged merger sounds practical as both devices are almost similar in looks and specs the difference being a stylus. Previous Galaxy Note devices had USP of large display with an S-Pen stylus. So the difference between the higher plus variant of the S series and the Note series becomes very marginal. The next in line Note series smartphone is Galaxy Note 9 to be unveiled on August 9. It is almost identical to the earlier launched Galaxy S9 Plus with the upgradations focused mainly on the S-Pen.

The merging of both the series will save a lot of time and money on the development, designing and making of the devices. Also now there will be clear distinction between the devices eliminating the confusion. Now Galaxy S10 will be unveiled next year which is rumoured to be available in three variants codenamed Beyond 0, Beyond 1 and Beyond 2. Beyond 0 is an entry level variant while the Beyond 1 is the regular Galaxy S10 variant while Beyond 2 will be the Note variant. This means the Plus variant may be cancelled and merged with the regular variant.

The report further mentioned that Beyond 1 and the Beyond 2 will be featuring an Fingerprint on Display(FOD) which means an in-screen fingerprint sensor. The entry level Beyond 1 which will be introduced first time in the S series will have a side mounted fingerprint sensor. This  makes Beyond 1 the first S series smartphone to have a side mounted fingerprint sensor.

The merging also allows new series to be launched in the later part of the year. Samsung is also reported to launch the foldable smartphone Galaxy X next year. The Galaxy S10 flagship will be launched in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next year, the annual trade show which will be held in Las Vegas from January 8 to 11.

TRAI may Lock Out all the iPhones in India, if it doesn’t allow DND 2.0 App in App Store!

Published

The iPhone maker Apple and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India or TRAI are in a serious dispute over the matter of SPAM calls and messages. TRAI has declared that if Apple doesnt abide by their instructions, they might end up ordering Indian telecom operators like Jio, Airtel and Idea to abolish iPhone from their networks i.e. the iPhone users won’t be able to get services from major Indian Network operators.

To cure the problem of unwanted promotional calls and messages annoying Indian users, TRAI took a step forward and launched an app called as DND (DND 2.0 after the latest update) to help users in getting rid of Spam. The app is already available on Play Store and TRAI wants it to be available for iOS platform as well.

Apple being cautious of the privacy of its users, has refused to allow the app on its proprietary App Store. This is due to the fact that the DND app requires access to the call and message records of the user, which is termed to be a privacy risk by the company.

As a result, TRAI has issued few new regulations which make it compulsory for Telecom Operators to allow the users for installation of the DND 2.0 app on their phones irrespective of if they own an iPhone or an Android phone. If any smartphone manufacturer does not permit functioning of such apps, the telecom operators have to ensure that they deregister and derecognize such devices from their telecom networks. All the operators have been given a time frame of 6 months for following the same.

The letter also narrates that if the upcoming iOS 12 release turns out to be a prerequisite for the installation of such apps, then the users who “may not wish to upgrade their current devices to the next level of the platform” will face derecognition of services as well, due to the choice made by customers.

This is not a direct commandment on Apple as TRAI has rights to control only the Telecom Operators in the country, not the smartphone makers. However, this will indirectly pressurize Apple to withdraw its decision and remove the restrictions for the DND app in the Appstore.

Summing up, if Apple doesn’t publish DND 2.0 app in its App Store, then the iPhone users may lose access to 3G, 4G and even basic 2G networks, depending upon the action taken by the operator.
