Flipkart reveals their BIG partnership with Asus. Will Launch Asus Zenfone Max Pro on April 23rd

Asus and Flipkart announced their new partnership on stage- a long term deal to sell Asus phones exclusively on Flipkart. Along with it, they also announced the launch of ZenFone Max Pro which will be exclusively available on Flipkart. The sale of the Zenfone Max Pro will commence from 12:30 PM on April 23, Monday.

Along with the Zenfone Max Pro, Asus and Flipkart have signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) to collaborate on new products specifically designed for the Indian market. Both the companies are set to extensively support each other in planning cum execution of the marketing of the upcoming Zenfone models.

The phone is expected to come with a Snapdragon 636 chipset, an under clocked  version of the Snapdragon 660.Other than this, there isn’t much on the plate that we know of. Details regarding the smartphone are skim as they haven’t announced the price and quarter of the specifications.

But we expect the phone to come with the same design as that of Asus Zenfone Max (M1), which was announced at MWC earlier this year.

This is not the first time Asus partnered with Flipkart for the launch of it’s smartphones. Back in 2014, Asus tied up with Flipkart exclusively to sell the Zenfone lineup which was a huge success in the mid-range segment until Xiaomi took over the market. “With Flipkart’s partnership, we aim to gain more insights about Indian consumers”Asus CEO Jerry Shen said in a press statement.

Going forward, Asus is expected to come up with more smartphones for the mid-range sector. Flipkart on the other hand, uneviled plans called “Mobiles 40 by 20″ which can be translated to 40% of the overall smartphone sales in the Indian market by 2020, put roughly a 100 million new customers.

Ironically, Asus’s partnership is coming at a time when Amazon decided to announce the Oneplus 6 exclusively on it’s platform. Flipkart, India’s homegrown e tailer is facing cut throat competition from the global leader Amazon. Nobody has an upper hand in the market right now, considering the amount of money being burnt day in and day out. Partnerships like these could go a long way in deciding the winner in the end.

Counterpoint & Canalys Publishes Q1 2018 Smartphone Shipments Reports, Xiaomi Leads with 31% Marketshare!

Counterpoint & Canalys have just shared their reports regarding smartphone shipments in India for the Q1 2018, and both the reports indicate an unstoppable rise of Xiaomi, the brand since where it’s journey started in India to now, has grown to capture the top spot.

In terms of smartphones, Xiaomi has secured the top position with a massive 31.1% of the market, which is a great increment from 13.1% from 2017. On the second spot is Samsung holding 26.2% of the smartphone market, and saw very little growth from 25.9%, the market share the company had in 2017.

The next few positions are held by Vivo, Oppo and Honor, followed by the other brands. But, here is the main conclusion- Xiaomi and Samsung now hold 58% of the smartphone market and Xiaomi alone rules over every single brand. As per Counterpoint,  Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 and 5 Pro were the most popular models for the Chinese brand, whereas Samsung Galaxy J7 NXT and J2 (2017) were the most popular phones from the South Korean Giant.

However, there is little growth in terms of overall market growth. In term of the individual growth rate of brands, Honor (Huawei) entered top five smartphone brands for the first time, and Xiaomi and OnePlus also maintains their positions well in terms of growth. Honor has grown 146%, while Xiaomi has a pretty impressive but lower rate at 134% and OnePlus has settled with 112% (Never settle, but 112% growth rate is fine).

These three are now the faster-growing brands in India. China-based Transsion Group (the holding group of Tecno, Itel and Infinix) has become the fifth largest player with 4% market share in Q1 2018 (combined for all three brands). Tecno, which debuted in April last year, has emerged as a leading smartphone brand and is close to entering the top ten list.

Canalys has also shared the report regarding smartphone shipment, and it echoes the same thing as Counterpoint. However, Canalys revealed that Q1 2018 saw 155% annual shipment growth of Redmi and Mi phones, which is equal to almost 9 million units. As per Canalys, Xiaomi has improved its distribution nationwide. And as Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Pro and a budget phone, Redmi 5A it saw a lot of sales and 3.5 million units of Redmi 5A were sold in three months.

Canalys also revealed that three out of four new smartphones or 75% of the new smartphones are from one of the top four companies. Brands like Lenovo and Gionee saw a massive drop in shipments by 60% and 90% respectively.

It is appreciable that Xiaomi is holding on to it’s #1 position in Indian smartphone market from the previous quarter results (Q4 2017), where they overtook Samsung to become the most selling brand in India. Also, it is worth noting that Samsung has improved on their market share even though there were reports of downward trends in Samsung’s market share in India.

Gionee to launch new smartphones with Face Unlock and 18:9 Display

We’re intrigued by exciting tech at OnPhones. The fact that relatively obscure OEM’s can make phones that rival the iPhone and Galaxy at a fraction of the cost is fascinating. After launching the S10 Lite late in December last year, Chinese smartphone maker Gionee is ready to rock the Indian market once again with new devices.

The devices will go on sale through retail stores initially and is expected to be priced between Rs 9000 and Rs 15000. As of the the phone being available online, there’s been no clear indication.

According to sources from Gizbot, the smartphones will come with  face unlock and Full view displays. The device is expected to come with 4GB RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage which can be expanded via a microSD card upto 256GB. That’s not all, the company is reportedly in talks with multiple telecom operators to give away data for free.

Gionee began it’s operation in India in 2012, back then it had a mere 2.2% market share in the Indian smartphone market. As of 2017, the company claims to have over 6%  market share in the Indian smartphone market which can be attributed to it’s 42,000 retail stores across 2200 towns and cities.

The company recently sent out media invited for an event which says,

Going back in time, Gionee had launched the S10 with multiple Whatsapp support, thus letting you separate your personal life from professional. After that, the company has been mum for sometime.

On a slightly similar note, Gionee recently announced restructuring plans for India in February to a media firm. Chang David, Global Sales Director, Gionee India quoted,

“We are in the process of restructuring our India team and executing a completely different business model for the brand in the market very soon”.

Although there has been reports of the company downsizing their operations in India recently, this seems to be a good comeback for the company. Let’s hope for the best.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun reveals Xiaomi’s plans for India. Says they’re open to have Android One on Redmi series!

Lei Jun, the co-founder, and CEO of Xiaomi just traveled to India recently along with many other executives, for the opening of their new headquarters in India. During an interaction with the media at Xiaomi’s new Indian Headquarters at Bangalore, he shared his thought regarding how Xiaomi is planning to disrupt the market, how the company is expanding its offline presence and many other things.

First of all, he talked about the demand of Redmi phones running stock Android and he said that as many of the Mi Fans love stock Android, he has planned to bring more Redmi Phones into the Indian market, under the Android One program. So, it is quite obvious that we will see the Mi A2 soon, suggested by the rumors that the Mi 6X, which has been launched in China recently will arrive in India as Mi A2 running stock Android.

Xiaomi CEO also acknowledged the issues with products getting out of stock very fast and being mostly unavailable, Mr. Jun cleared this by saying that Xiaomi doesn’t consider the ‘out of stock’ label as a medal of honor and the company is working hard to meet the demands. He specifically pointed out that Xiaomi is finding it tough to fulfill the demand of two of its latest products- the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Mi TV 4.

He also pointed out they Xiaomi has ramped up the production capacity by three times in the last one year, but with Redmi Note 5 Pro, there is a supply issue with a ‘light assorting chip’ which is part of the camera module on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. He also said that demand for RAM has increased a lot and crypto-mining is making the situation worse.

At this point, Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi India Head and Global VP added that all products except the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Mi TV 4 are on open sale and have no availability issues. He also added they Xiaomi is using machine learning to keep away resellers. While he was asked about the premium amount that some Mi Preferred partners and resellers are charging, Manu said that Xiaomi is cutting off the relationship with such dealers.

Mr. Jun is hopeful regarding manufacturing plants for televisions in India and he said that Xiaomi is now paying 20% import duties, so setting up plants for manufacturing televisions in India will help them.

While he was asked an obvious question regarding how tough it is for Xiaomi to sell phones that are priced above Rs. 15,000, he didn’t even try to avoid it and reply in a straightforward way, he said,

“We are still in our fourth year of operations in India. We have managed to be successful in five categories – Redmi 4A/5A (Rs 6,000), Redmi 4/5 (Rs 7,000 ~ Rs 10,000), Redmi Note 5/Pro (Rs 10,000 ~ Rs 15,000), Redmi Y1 (< Rs 10,000) and Mi A1 (< Rs 15,000). We want to take this step by step. We want to only introduce products which will be a hit in the Indian market. In the next two years, we want to have successful products in < Rs 20,000, < Rs 30,000 and Rs 30,000+ categories.”

And he explained why Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2 didn’t sell well when compared to other phones from Xiaomi. He pointed out that many people demand phones like the ones OnePlus brings, and in the case of OnePlus a lot of the features are decided specifically for India, whereas the Mi Mix wasn’t designed specifically for India and hence, Xiaomi will try to bring some premium phones focused towards India, and he joked saying that probably he won’t have to answer to this question next year.

Question regarding the latest design trends was thrown at Mr. Jun and he was asked about the idea of having a notch on a smartphone. And he replied,

“Somehow the media in China doesn’t like the idea of the notch on display. What do you think? It’s indeed a very high-pressure move for all smartphone vendors. People want a full-screen display, but we need to make space for camera, sensors, etc. There is no perfect solution yet.”

He also talked about Xiaomi’s plan for offline expansion, he seemed to be quite happy with the present data as, according to  IDC, Xiaomi has 11-12% share in the offline market right now. He said that though the figure is not as good as 56% share in the online smartphone market, he assumes that Xiaomi would be able to capture 30% of the offline market by next year.
